Mount Olive Middle School History

Mount Olive Graded School building (circa 1906) was located on the west side of the 200 block of North Breazeale Avenue.

It would later become the first home of Mount Olive college. (Now demolished and the home of Family Medicine Center.)

The following is from:  Mount Olive Prospered with Produce; by Bob Johnson pg 174, unsure of paper source.

"Education was stressed in Mount Olive's early years. Early teachers in its first school included Dick Millard, Jesse Albritton, Capt. W.S. Byrd, L.G. Graves, Nersus English, W.F. English and Miss Sulu Marable.  The small School was replaced by an "Academy" and a private high school was organized later. The high school teachers included W. J. Scroggs, Edward E. Britton, J.O. Carr, Jefferson Davis, James Smith and  D.F. Nicholson.

A tax-supported school was operated simultaneously with the high school.  It's teachers included Miss Lou Smith, Miss Salie Smith, Mrs. J.A. Archer, Miss Frankie Houston and Mrs. Roberta English."

In the 60's  the 3 story building located on Wooten Street was Mount Olive Jr. High School

Remodeled in 1999 as a apartment building.

It is  currently owned & used by University of Mount Olive for Dorms & music classrooms.  The attached Assembly hall is used for UMO music/band & performances. Renamed after Marcy & William Byrd previous President & his wife at Mount Olive College.

In 1961 the yearbook cover was "MOHI".

Mount Olive Middle School & Gym is currently (2015)  located at 309 Wooten Street and contains grades 5-8.
